A Perfect Circle – Mer De Noms [2 LP]

(180 Gram Vinyl in Gatefold Satin Stock Jacket) $28
The introduction of A Perfect Circle on Mer de Noms (Sea of Names in French) was that of a side project of Tool. Over the development of the project and certainly leading into the present, the strength of the A Perfect Circle brand has shifted the balance from a so called side project to a band in their own right. The powerful combination of Maynard James Keenan's aching voice and Billy Howerdel's accomplished songs and production skills has helped A Perfect Circle become one of the premier lifestyle bands and a major success in the rock and alternative rock formats.

Originally released in 2007, here is your chance to own Beastie Boys: Best of Grand Royal 12s. The album is pressed on double vinyl, and it includes remixes of old and newer Beasties tracks: check out Soul Assassin Remix of "So Watch' Cha Want(1), Fuzzy Logic Remix of "Intergalactic(2)," 12" version of "Rock Hard(3)," Green Mix of "Sureshot(4)" and PB Balloon Mix of "Rootdown(5)." For DJs, the value of this release is obvious since EVERYONE is a Beasties fan, but the tracks on Best Of Grand Royal 12s are also awesome for listening-at-home purposes. Don't miss out!

(feat. Billie Holiday, Bo Diddley, Bernard Purdie, Cal Tjader, etc.) $15

Funkadelic – Funkadelic [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl) $21

The 1970 debut from Detroit's nastiest, most shredding progenitors of funk-rock. Funkadelic formed in the late '60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross, and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporates a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time. Sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow to Ice Cube, Funkadelic still sounds fresh today and is the first solid example of George Clinton's eccentric genius. 180 gram vinyl in a deluxe classic style jacket.

(180 Gram Vinyl with one Etched side in Gatefold Jacket) $25

This musical adventure by Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), epitomizes the alt-rock ethic – do the music you love, do it yourself, and do it fast. The Dead Weather brings together lead singer Alison Mosshart (half of the London-based lo-fi post-punk duo The Kills), Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, The Raconteurs’ bassist Jack Lawrence, and White on drums and vocals. White also produced the group’s debut album, Horehound, recorded in just three weeks earlier this year at his newly constructed Nashville studio.
An exhilarating mix of punchy blues singing from Mosshart and garage rock with arena ambitions, Horehound introduces the musical whirlwind that is The Dead Weather. Vinyl package featuring two 180g heavy-weight black vinyl discs in a gatefold jacket.

Nina Simone – Remixed & Reimagined [LP] $19

The music, image, strength and style of Nina Simone, "The High Priestess Of Soul," have as strong of an impact today as they ever had. Features new remixes by the most reputable and talented remixers in the game, including Tony Humphries, Francois K, DJ Logic, Mocean Worker and more. Also includes the Madison Park vs. Lenny B remix of Look Of Love, as featured on the Sex And The City Motion Picture Soundtrack!

 Portishead – Portishead [2 LP] $15

Dramatic, monotone and eerie describe some of the vocals by Beth Gibbons on this dark trip-hop album. Portishead's self-titled album follows their debut album, "Dummy", with darker music infused with jazzy percussion and experimental intense beats. The group of Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley, Dave McDonald (engineer and producer) and Beth Gibbons left sampling behind when choosing to record their own unique sounds for their second collection of tunes.

Nine Inch Nails – Pretty Hate Machine
(Original Version) [LP] $17

Although Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor became the poster boy for industrial rock in the early 1990s, his '89 debut, PRETTY HATE MACHINE, actually has a stronger foothold in '80s synth-pop. The guitar-heavy opener, ''Head Like a Hole,'' is the most aggressive track on the album and proved to be the signature song for Reznor's initial breakthrough, but much of the disc sounds like Depeche Mode in a particularly bad mood. All of the tracks on PRETTY HATE MACHINE are based on synthesizer lines and programmed beats, with other elements – such as the distinctive bass on ''Sanctified'' and sampled explosions on ''That's What I Get'' – filling out the sound. Despite Reznor's morose lyrics, a number of HATE MACHINE's finest moments are energetic dance tunes, particularly ''Down in It'' and the surging ''Sin.'' Oddly enough, Reznor's fiercer, and seemingly less accessible, subsequent work (the BROKEN EP and THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL) led directly to his mainstream success, but PRETTY HATE MACHINE reveals where the Nine Inch Nails aesthetic started out.

Primus – Sailing The Seas Of Cheese [LP]
(180 Gram Vinyl) $22
Another alternative classic originally released in 1991, available on vinyl for the first time since its initial release. The third album from Les Claypool & Co. and first for a major label, is a twisted mix of prog rock, funk and punk, with a taste for Frank Zappa's humor and Captain Beefheart's guttural growl. One of the few bands to have the bass as the prominent instrument, Claypool alternates from funky slaps to throbbing power chords to heavy, heavy solos while the guitar provides almost dissonant texturing beneath the bass' shredding. Features the MTV hit Jerry Was A Race Car Driver. Available on 180g Vinyl!

Queens Of The Stone Age – Queens Of The Stone Age
[2 LP]
(180 Gram Vinyl, double-gatefold, reissue debut album with three unreleased songs, includes download) $25

Upon the dissolution of the criminally overlooked Kyuss, guitarist Josh Homme pulled up stakes from the California Desert for the Pacific Northwest to work on a new project concurrent with spending time on the road as second guitarist in Screaming Trees. Seeking a new sound, Homme discarded the sludgy low-end expanses of his former band for much tighter song structure (for the most part) and honest-togoodness capital 'H' hooks and what was originally christened Gamma Ray was quickly changed to Queens Of The Stone Age shortly after birth.

Homme returned to his old stomping grounds and re-united with latter day Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernandez to record as a fake trio (bass player ''Carlo Von Sexron'' is a nom-deboom for Homme) and QOTSA came into full bloom. If this re-issue doesn't document ''hour zero,'' it's only a few minutes past. ''Regular John'' introduces Homme as a smooth and assured vocalist with great melodic instinct. Tracks like ''Avon'' and ''Walkin' On Sidewalks'' lock into heavy riffs that are in entrancing in their repetition and subtle shifts. And it's hard to believe that insistently catchy ''How To Handle A Rope'' didn't make a greater impact on mainstream radio upon its initial release. Amidst the mid-fi riffage and willful experimentalism of an artist forging a new sound for himself are some killer guitar melodies that could have easily come from 1971, 1991 or 2011. And that's part of the timelessness of this unassuming debut album. QOTSA can only truly be classified as a ''rock band;'' Any attempt to narrow that down further would be to neglect the scope of Homme's broad body of work and the band's wide-reaching appeal.

This re-issue has been fully remastered from the original tapes and has been expanded by three tracks on double vinyl. ''The Bronze'' & ''These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For'' (from the a split EP from '98) and ''Spiders and Vinegaroons'' which was part of the posthumous Kyuss/QOTSA split EP. The vinyl is a double LP deluxe gatefold package that will also include a free digital download card.

The Dead Weather – Sea Of Cowards
[LP] (180 Gram Vinyl) $20

Sea Of Cowards is a robust and vigorous second act, filled with primal, bone quaking rock rhythms and the same stellar urban blues and throbbing sleaze as its predecessor; but this time The Dead Weather push their sound even further, brilliantly building upon their raw chemistry to create the most vital sounding album you'll hear all year.

The latest musical adventure by Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), epitomizes the alt-rock ethic–do the music you love, do it yourself, and do it fast. The Dead Weather brings together lead singer Alison Mosshart (half of the London-based lo-fi post-punk duo The Kills), Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, The Raconteurs' bassist Jack Lawrence, and White on drums and vocals.

With their second album in less than a year, the Dead Weather establish themselves as bona fide HEAVY with the monster of a record that is ''Sea of Cowards'' so either climb on the ship or be cast away in the turbulent waters that surround it.

Steel Pulse – Earth Crisis (Remastered) [LP] $16

One of the U.K.’s most legendary reggae bands, Steel Pulse was formed in the tough Handsworth neighborhood of Birmingham in1975 by a group of friends from struggling West Indian immigrant families. Chief among them was David Hinds, Steel Pulse’s lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter. Building on a base of roots reggae, they mixed latin, jazz, and R&B influences in with the Rasta beats – as well as impassioned messages of social justice and political protest. Steel Pulse’s stellar musicianship and ideological courage shine on the 1984 album EARTH CRISIS, now available at FeeLit.

 (Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo) $18

Danger Mouse is one of the most important artist/producers in music today. ''Demon Days'' sold over 5 million worldwide and Dangerdoom's ''The Mouse And The Mask'' sold over 100,000 units. Accolades include GQ's ''Men Of The Year'' honor; Spin's ''Eccentric Genius Of The Year'', NME's ''Hottest Hip-Hop Producer In The World'', Entertainment Weekly's ''Album Of The Year'', Grammy nomination for Producer Of The Year, and more. Cee-Lo is a Grammy-nominated, founding member of Goodie Mob. He wrote and produced the Pussycat Dolls #1 smash hit ''Don't Cha'', and his two solo albums for Arista scanned over 500,000 units combined. He also wrote hit singles for Ludacris, Common, P Diddy, Trick Daddy, and others. ''Goodie Mob'' has sold over two million albums worldwide. ''Crazy'', from this release, is all over UK's Radio One.

J Dilla – Ruff Draft Instrumentals [LP] $18

These self-produced tracks make up one of the late J Dilla's least known works during his lifetime. Released on vinyl only in February 2003 this sought-after release was elusive and virtually unknown to the casual Dilla fan until Stones Throw's reissue in 2007. Recorded in the wake of a failed deal with major label MCA, Dilla returned to solo recordings as a fiercely independent artist with Ruff Draft.
These are the instrumentals from the infamous, the official, Ruff Draft.

Sun Ra's The Soul Vibrations Of Man is an amazing album. This mid 70s LP is supposedly one of the rarest Sun Ra albums – so, the reissue version seems long overdue. The LP opens with some laid back free jazz reed work and moves into a super cool call and response number. The flip-side is a set of harder free jazz tunes with some brass solos and crazy synth work.

 (180 Gram Vinyl in Copper-embossed, gatefold tip-on jacket) $21
'Broken Boy Soldiers'' is the debut album from the Raconteurs. By pairing pop songsmith Brendan Benson with hard-rocking Jack White (the White Stripes) and backing them with the crack rhythm section of Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (both of the Greenhornes) what resulted is a completely kick-ass album. From the anthemic volley of ''Steady, As She Goes'' to the sing-songy crunch of ''Hands'' and the downright sinister slow creep of ''Blue Veins'' this album covers the complete range of human emotion.

''Broken Boy Soldiers'' is the first proper vinyl reissue from Third Man (both the V2 and XL versions of this LP are out-of-print) with plans to tackle the rest of the White Stripes and Jack White back catalog already in the works. Third Man aims for these reissues to be the definitive, go-to versions of all their titles and this issue of ''Broken Boy Soldiers'' definitely earns that distinction.

We’re proud to announce the long-overdue reissues of the first three LP’s by The White Stripes.

Out-of-print in North America since 2005, the utmost care was taken in presenting these records in the best way possible.
We started by mastering each LP from the original analog master tapes, the first time this process had been used for any of these titles. While extremely labor-intensive, this method ensured that the material was never converted into a digital signal. The result is an audio quality that stiffens the hairs on the back of your neck.
We pressed each record on 180-gram vinyl, again, the first time any of these three albums have been afforded this superior vinyl weight.
For artwork, we started from scratch and went back and tracked down all the source material, working from the original photographic prints to provide the crispest versions possible of these album covers.
From there, we printed the artwork on the deluxe old-style, tip-on sleeves from the wonderful folks at Stoughton Printing in California. This process involves printing the artwork on on sheet of paper (a slick) which is then folded over and hand-glued to a heavy board blank jacket. The difference in the final product of a tip-on sleeve as opposed to a regular, direct-to-board sleeve is akin to the difference between hardcover and paperback books.

Also, for the first time ever, each record comes with a coupon for MP3 downloads of the entire album.

All these factors together makes these versions of The White Stripes, De Stijl and White Blood Cells the DEFINITIVE editions of these albums. These are the versions The White Stripes want people to have for posterity.

The band's commercial break through, this 2001 album went gold, spinning off the Top 20 Modern Rock hits ''Fell In Love With A Girl'' and ''Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground.''

The White Stripes, songwriter Jack White (vocals, guitar, piano, and once bass) and Meg White (drums and occasional vocals) formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit independent music underground, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the garage rock revival scene.

Their use of analog and low-fidelity equipment in the recording process partnered with a do-it-yourself approach created a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape
Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

The last decade has seen the rise of artists who have rejected academia to embrace urban culture as their inspiration. The exhibition Viva la Revolución: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape represents the pinnacle of this progression through an epic convergence of 20 artists from around the world.

The urban landscape serves as the inspiration and canvas in an exhibition comprised of four parts: work inside the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD), Public Commissions and Interventions, Bombing, and a Collaborative Site. Barry McGee, Moris, Banksy, Ryan McGinness, Mark Bradford, Dr. Lakra, Swoon, Os Gemoes and others contribute paintings, prints, sculpture, murals, and installations, while Invader and Shepard Fairey create large outdoor murals and Dzine embellishes the city with tricked out pedicabs.

This companion catalogue to the exhibition includes essays by curator Pedro Alonzo and Alex Baker, and a preface by Hugh M. Davies.

About the Artist: Buff Monster lives in Hollywood and cites heavy metal music, ice cream and Japanese culture as major influences. The color pink, as a symbol of confidence, individuality and happiness, is present in everything he creates. Buff is known for putting up thousands of silkscreened posters across Los Angeles and also in faraway places. When his original and one-and-only wheat paste brush was no longer usable, seven years of frequent poster missions came to an end. Having given up a very productive street art career, he now works exclusively on fine art paintings, collectible toys and select design projects. His works have been exhibited in numerous galleries, usually accompanied by large installations to enhance the paintings. Aside from his "Happy Creamy" Vannen watch, he has many other projects in the works.

About the Artist: Chris Ryniak was born in 1976 in a safely distanced suburb of Detroit. He spent his childhood basking in the warm glow of Saturday morning cartoons, monster movies and flipping over rocks in search of insects and reptiles. In his teenage years, Chris' attention would shift to the world of skateboarding and the artists associated with the skate community, which later led to interests in commercial illustration. A graduate and former instructor at the Ringling School of Art and Design, Chris is now a painter and sculptor of all manner of critters that grace canvases as well as toy and print platforms.
A Perfect Circle – Mer De Noms [2 LP] (180 Gram Vinyl in Gatefold Satin Stock Jacket) $28

The introduction of A Perfect Circle on Mer de Noms (Sea of Names in French) was that of a side project of Tool. Over the development of the project and certainly leading into the present, the strength of the A Perfect Circle brand has shifted the balance from a so called side project to a band in their own right. The powerful combination of Maynard James Keenan’s aching voice and Billy Howerdel’s accomplished songs and production skills has helped A Perfect Circle become one of the premier lifestyle bands and a major success in the rock and alternative rock formats.

The Black Keys – The Big Come Up [LP] (Pink Vinyl, includes poster) $19 Tracklisting:

The Black Keys are Dan Auerbach (guitar and lead vocals) and Patrick Carney (drummer).According to an interview on NPR’s Fresh Air the name came from a schizophrenic artist named Alfred McMoore that the pair knew; he would leave incoherent messages on their answering machines referring to their fathers as “black keys” such as “D flat” when he was upset with them.

The band released their debut album, The Big Come Up, in early 2002. The album was very successful for a new independent rock band.

The Dead Weather – Horehound [2 LP] (180 Gram Vinyl with one Etched side in Gatefold Jacket) $25

The Dead Weather – Sea Of Cowards [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl) $20

Sea Of Cowards is a robust and vigorous second act, filled with primal, bone quaking rock rhythms and the same stellar urban blues and throbbing sleaze as its predecessor; but this time The Dead Weather push their sound even further, brilliantly building upon their raw chemistry to create the most vital sounding album you’ll hear all year.

The latest musical adventure by Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), epitomizes the alt-rock ethic–do the music you love, do it yourself, and do it fast. The Dead Weather brings together lead singer Alison Mosshart (half of the London-based lo-fi post-punk duo The Kills), Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita, The Raconteurs’ bassist Jack Lawrence, and White on drums and vocals.

With their second album in less than a year, the Dead Weather establish themselves as bona fide HEAVY with the monster of a record that is ”Sea of Cowards” so either climb on the ship or be cast away in the turbulent waters that surround it.

Funkadelic – Funkadelic [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl) $21

The 1970 debut from Detroit’s nastiest, most shredding progenitors of funk-rock. Funkadelic formed in the late ’60s and, in addition to Clinton, included the blazing guitar of Eddie Hazel, organist Mickey Atkins, rhythm guitarist Tawl Ross, and drummer Tiki Fulwood. Though firmly rooted in funk and soul, Funkadelic incorporates a dark psychedelic element, influenced by Hendrix and Sly Stone, to create a sound that was unparalleled at the time. Sampled by everyone from DJ Shadow to Ice Cube, Funkadelic still sounds fresh today and is the first solid example of George Clinton’s eccentric genius. 180 gram vinyl in a deluxe classic style jacket.

J Dilla – Ruff Draft Instrumentals [LP] $18

These self-produced tracks make up one of the late J Dilla’s least known works during his lifetime. Released on vinyl only in February 2003 this sought-after release was elusive and virtually unknown to the casual Dilla fan until Stones Throw’s reissue in 2007. Recorded in the wake of a failed deal with major label MCA, Dilla returned to solo recordings as a fiercely independent artist with Ruff Draft.

Nine Inch Nails – Pretty Hate Machine (Original Version) [LP] $17

Although Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor became the poster boy for industrial rock in the early 1990s, his ’89 debut, PRETTY HATE MACHINE, actually has a stronger foothold in ’80s synth-pop. The guitar-heavy opener, ”Head Like a Hole,” is the most aggressive track on the album and proved to be the signature song for Reznor’s initial breakthrough, but much of the disc sounds like Depeche Mode in a particularly bad mood. All of the tracks on PRETTY HATE MACHINE are based on synthesizer lines and programmed beats, with other elements – such as the distinctive bass on ”Sanctified” and sampled explosions on ”That’s What I Get” – filling out the sound. Despite Reznor’s morose lyrics, a number of HATE MACHINE’s finest moments are energetic dance tunes, particularly ”Down in It” and the surging ”Sin.” Oddly enough, Reznor’s fiercer, and seemingly less accessible, subsequent work (the BROKEN EP and THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL) led directly to his mainstream success, but PRETTY HATE MACHINE reveals where the Nine Inch Nails aesthetic started out.

Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor (vocals, various instruments).Additional personnel includes: Richard Patrick (guitar); Chris Vrenna (drums).

Primus – Sailing The Seas Of Cheese [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl) $22

Another alternative classic originally released in 1991, available on vinyl for the first time since its initial release. The third album from Les Claypool & Co. and first for a major label, is a twisted mix of prog rock, funk and punk, with a taste for Frank Zappa’s humor and Captain Beefheart’s guttural growl. One of the few bands to have the bass as the prominent instrument, Claypool alternates from funky slaps to throbbing power chords to heavy, heavy solos while the guitar provides almost dissonant texturing beneath the bass’ shredding. Features the MTV hit Jerry Was A Race Car Driver. Available on 180g Vinyl!

Queens Of The Stone Age – Queens Of The Stone Age [2 LP] (180 Gram Vinyl, double-gatefold, reissue debut album with three unreleased songs, includes download) $25

Upon the dissolution of the criminally overlooked Kyuss, guitarist Josh Homme pulled up stakes from the California Desert for the Pacific Northwest to work on a new project concurrent with spending time on the road as second guitarist in Screaming Trees. Seeking a new sound, Homme discarded the sludgy low-end expanses of his former band for much tighter song structure (for the most part) and honest-togoodness capital ‘H’ hooks and what was originally christened Gamma Ray was quickly changed to Queens Of The Stone Age shortly after birth.

Homme returned to his old stomping grounds and re-united with latter day Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernandez to record as a fake trio (bass player ”Carlo Von Sexron” is a nom-deboom for Homme) and QOTSA came into full bloom. If this re-issue doesn’t document ”hour zero,” it’s only a few minutes past. ”Regular John” introduces Homme as a smooth and assured vocalist with great melodic instinct. Tracks like ”Avon” and ”Walkin’ On Sidewalks” lock into heavy riffs that are in entrancing in their repetition and subtle shifts. And it’s hard to believe that insistently catchy ”How To Handle A Rope” didn’t make a greater impact on mainstream radio upon its initial release. Amidst the mid-fi riffage and willful experimentalism of an artist forging a new sound for himself are some killer guitar melodies that could have easily come from 1971, 1991 or 2011. And that’s part of the timelessness of this unassuming debut album. QOTSA can only truly be classified as a ”rock band;” Any attempt to narrow that down further would be to neglect the scope of Homme’s broad body of work and the band’s wide-reaching appeal.

This re-issue has been fully remastered from the original tapes and has been expanded by three tracks on double vinyl. ”The Bronze” & ”These Aren’t the Droids You’re Looking For” (from the a split EP from ’98) and ”Spiders and Vinegaroons” which was part of the posthumous Kyuss/QOTSA split EP. The vinyl is a double LP deluxe gatefold package that will also include a free digital download card.

The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl in Copper-embossed, gatefold tip-on jacket) $21

‘Broken Boy Soldiers” is the debut album from the Raconteurs. By pairing pop songsmith Brendan Benson with hard-rocking Jack White (the White Stripes) and backing them with the crack rhythm section of Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (both of the Greenhornes) what resulted is a completely kick-ass album. From the anthemic volley of ”Steady, As She Goes” to the sing-songy crunch of ”Hands” and the downright sinister slow creep of ”Blue Veins” this album covers the complete range of human emotion.

”Broken Boy Soldiers” is the first proper vinyl reissue from Third Man (both the V2 and XL versions of this LP are out-of-print) with plans to tackle the rest of the White Stripes and Jack White back catalog already in the works. Third Man aims for these reissues to be the definitive, go-to versions of all their titles and this issue of ”Broken Boy Soldiers” definitely earns that distinction.

Originally Released:1976
Sun Ra’s The Soul Vibrations Of Man is an amazing album.

Various Artists – Soviet Funk: Volume 2 [LP] (Red/Black Split-colored Vinyl, plus mp3 download card) $21

The Soviet Funk series was all recorded by Pavel Sysoyev in Abakan, the capital city of Khakassia between 1971 and 1976. Sysoyev was an employee of the USSR State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcast (state controlled media). He ran a recording studio intended to create content solely for the government media entity. However, Sysoyev frequently brought in his friends and ran late night recording sessions when no one else was around. Today Pavel Sysoyev resides in Saint Paul, MN, just minutes from the Secret Stash headquarters. The label was introduced to him through a network of local producers. Within a matter of weeks we were in business together.

Soviet Funk Volume Two
After Secret Stash Records struck a deal with Pavel Sysoyev to mine his catalog of recorded music we quickly realized that the most difficult part was going to be narrowing down his massive collection into a few user friendly volumes of LP releases. With so much incredible music to work with, this would be no easy task. Volume 1 ultimately served as a nice introduction to Mr. Sysoyev’s catalog. For the most part it was extremely ”user-friendly” and accessible (the only exception possibly being the Chizhova/Baykov tunes, which took a pretty big step ”outside the box”). While it was what we considered to be a truly great record, it only scratched the surface of the musicality and creativity found in his collection. However, Volume II takes a closer look at the more jazz infused side of Pavel’s signature Soviet Funk sound. It includes more complex compositions and a much more aggressive playing style. However, it still maintains that groovy fun spirit captured so well in Volume 1.

White Stripes – De Stijl [LP] (180 Gram Vinyl, Analog-Mastering, includes Download, Deluxe Gatefold) $21

The band’s second album, recorded on 8-track analog tape in Jack’s living room, was released in 2000 and today is a cult classic.

Garage Rock

Blue Series 7” single by the awesome, all female, Japanese, rock group, The 5,6,7,8′s! Yoshiko Ronnie Fujiyama, Omo The Screaming Chellio Panther, Sachiko The Geisha Girl and Mabo the 88, (that’s the 5.6.7.8′s if you’re into the whole brevity thing) present two of their finest sides to date ”Sho-Jo-Ji (The Hungry Raccoon)” a song so infectious you’ll be singing it over and over until everyone around you goes mad and ”Charumera Sobaya (The Soba Song)” an equally great jam about noodles. Who doesn’t love noodles? In Japan these are considered quirky ”novelty” songs, but leave it to these girls to flip the script and in the process breathe a whole new life into the songs. Produced by long time super-fan Jack White.

Dead Weather, The – Treat Me Like Your Mother b/w You Just Can’t Win [7''] (b-side track is remake of classic by Them and exclusive to this single) $6.98
Third Man Records
Alternative Rock
7Inch

Produced, engineered and mixed by Jack White III at Third Man Studios
7” vinyl single with picture sleeve

The 2nd single from the Dead Weather rock and roll juggernaut is more amplified terror riffing and slithery vocals. Alison Mosshart (the Kills) spits polite venom while Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) lurches on a twisted guitar/organ spell. The stuttered back-beat courtesy of Jack White (the White Stripes) locks down with bombastic bass from Jack Lawrence (the Raconteurs) and the end result is quite likely the breakout hit of the summer of 2009. B-side is exclusive to the release and is a brooding cover of Them’s forgotten ‘You Just Can’t Win’ penned by pre-solo fame Van Morrison that finds White taking lead vocal duties and accurately replicating Van’s forlorn delivery.

Classic Records/Rock The House/Arista
LP
Pop, Downtempo

The title notwithstanding, this debut from the former Faithless singer is pretty angelic-sounding stuff. You’re bound to think of Sinead O’Connor, but the comparison is as misleading as it is inevitable. Granted, Dido’s ethereal vocals here frequently recall O’Connor; but Dido’s music, while inventively augmented with electronics, is generally less adventurous. Ditto No Angel’s lyrics, which focus almost exclusively on love, lust, and relationships. That said, the fact remains that this is an auspicious and highly listenable album; atmospheric, seductive, and beautifully produced and sequenced.

ESL Music
Disco, Soul

Hustler. Smooth operator. Silky vocalist. Master saxophone player. How many ways can we describe Frank Mitchell Jr.? He has arrived in our time from another era; an era of big lapels and even bigger Afros. Frank Mitchell Jr. brings the soul and the funk, and he ain’t taking no lip. Frank Mitchell Jr. is a man with a mysterious past. Raised in a Washington DC orphanage he never knew his parents and had to shape his own identity from the urban music culture around him. Blues, jazz, go-go, r&b, and soul music are threads in the fabric of Frank Mitchell Jr.’s very being; and perhaps even his tailored suit. As a young boy Frank Mitchell Jr. came to the attention of the director for the Boys Choir of the National Cathedral. He spent years singing as a Soprano there, until his voice began changing. Finding himself at a crossroads, he picked up an old tenor saxophone and found his new calling. He began to win chairs in various city honor bands, and then moved on to professional gigs with many roving blues and r&b artists. Much cash was blown in late-night dice games, but the streets wouldn’t hold him back. Having moved on to play with local reggae/funk favorites See-I and Thievery Corporation’s legendary live stage band (and even dropping some red-hot saxophone licks on Thievery Corporation’s album Radio Retaliation) Frank Mitchell Jr. is now ready to strike out with his own solo music project. Re-energized and finding his singing voice again, Frank Mitchell Jr.’s The Booty Lock EP represents a rebirth and a new movement in funk
and soul. Produced by Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation and featuring a fiery studio back up band comprised of various local musical rogues, ”Booty Lock” is set to light dance floors ablaze. No question. Let the rhythm grab you by the hips and draw you in. Don’t resist. Frank Mitchell Jr. knows what he wants and he ain’t take no lip!

Blues

Train-hopping hobo blues sensation Seasick Steve teams up with Jack White and covers two classics by the legendary Mississippi Fred McDowell. The male/female vox on ”Lines” captivate over a Zep-worthy rhythm section while the slow-burn slide of ”Levee” is deep, down and dirgey like the best of Delta blues. Steve is a proper festival-headliner in the UK/Europe and we’re pretty sure this single will be the start of his widespread appreciation in the US.

LP
Blues Rock, Garage Rock, Indie Rock

On March 16, enigmatic duo The White Stripes will be releasing their first-ever official live album, featuring 16 songs on 180 Gram Vinyl.

In the summer of 2007, The White Stripes embarked on a cross-country Canadian tour to accomplish their goal of performing in every province and territory across the expansive northern nation. These two incredible pieces are a unique documentation of that journey, providing a fascinating look into the on and off stage lives of one of the world’s most captivating bands.

Having first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2009, Under Great White Northern Lights documents the band playing to crowds in towns of all sizes across the Great White North – from traditional venues to matinee gigs at unusual locations such as a bowling alley, a boat and even on a city bus – culminating in a momentous 10th Anniversary show at the historic Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.

A captivating mix of striking live footage and poignant off-stage moments, this visually stirring and emotive feature length film celebrates the band’s 10 year history, bringing the duo full circle in their career to a place reminiscent of how they first started out; shows where no one knew who they were, and where they were left to make a first impression with their music.

The live album continues that celebration and is a perfect companion piece to the film, featuring 16 songs recorded at various shows throughout the Canadian tour – a collection that captures all the aural intensity and spontaneity that The White Stripes have become known for. A compelling reflection of the band’s career, both the live album and the documentary will allow fans to reminisce about where they were when they first heard The White Stripes, while also adding extraordinary pieces of work to their already stunning artistic cannon.

Track Listing:
1. Let’s Shake Hands
2. Black Math
3. Little Ghost
4. Blue Orchid
5. The Union Forever
6. Ball and Biscuit

In commemoration of its 25th year, the JazzReggae Festival at UCLA releases a documentary that looks back through its history with festival footage and exclusive interviews with past producers. From its humble beginnings to its acclaimed present, the JazzReggae Festival has been entertaining Southern California since 1986 with performances by Erykah Badu, The Roots, and Damien Marley. From interviews with the festival’s founder Ron Richards to a fish-eyed view of the Roots performance in 2008, the documentary explores the JazzReggae Festival’s history, tradition, and importance as a cultural institution in Los Angeles.
25th JazzReggae Festival UCLA May 29-30

The JazzReggae Festival at UCLA kicks off the summer for the entire Los Angeles community. Held every Memorial Day Weekend, this year’s festival marks the 25th anniversary of this historic celebration of music, culture, and community. The JazzReggae Festival is the largest, entirely student produced and run event of its kind on the West Coast. A staff of 30 UCLA undergraduates consistantly proves that today’s youth can create something as distinguished and professional as JazzReggae Fest.

The JazzReggae Festival began as a single-day Jazz Festival, but the popularity and notoriety of the show, along with the drive and passion from the student producers, enabled the concert to become a two-day Jazz and Reggae festival. Both days allow everyone in attendance to explore the rich musical lineage of these musical styles. In addition to music, the JazzReggae Festival incorporates many cultures by showcasing a variety of food and craft vendors from multifarious backgrounds and communities. With such a diverse selection of cultural food and goods, the JazzReggae Festival allows visitors to gain a new experience that they would normally never have.

As an active part of the Los Angeles community, the JazzReggae Festival works tirelessly to preserve our world and keep our community thriving. We do this in part through our multifaceted sustainability program. As one of the first festivals in the world to feature sustainability and environmental protection as a basis for all of our decisions, 2011 promises to be our greenest festival to date. In previous years, our sustainability team has worked to eliminate single-use water bottles by selling affordable aluminum JazzReggae water bottles and setting up a free water-refilling station. By setting up recycling and compost bins with every trashcan, the festival works to eliminate waste and promote recycling and multi-use utensils and packaging. Also, through the use of solar and natural gas to power our stage and vendors, the JazzReggae Festival continually limits our eco-footprint on our community.

The 2010 festival marked the first year of interactive, visual art on the grounds. The sustainability tent, set up to educate visitors on how to improve their lives and our world through sustainable acts and choices, featured sustainable UCLA student art. Across the field, four live artists, including Mear One, painted giant pallets while festival goers watched.

In short, we believe in creating a music festival that will help to build a better future. We would like to think of this as our contribution as students to the community at large. In the past, we have worked with other non-profit groups such as the UCLA Music Outreach Program, which sends UCLA Music Students to underserved public schools in Los Angeles who have lost their music programs. These students volunteer at schools in order to teach music to a generation of students who have been robbed of this educational and extracurricular opportunity. In order to help revive these programs, the JazzReggae Festival at UCLA contributes the continuation of the Music Outreach Program.

As unpaid, but extremely passionate students we understand these times are tough. By keeping ticket prices low, while providing professional quality work and maintaining core values of equality, education and passion for music, we provide people a chance to experience an event that is often a cherished life long memory. Such an idealistic desire is hard to maintain in today’s world, especially during these rocky times, but we believe that this type of endeavor will bring about a brighter future.

“Dear Professor overflows with romance and whimsy, thanks in no small part to singer-guitarist Adam Powell’s allegorical lyrics and the band’s lush arrangements (vibraphone, banjo, accordion, horns, etc.). But songs about distance (“One Thousand and Eleven Miles Away”), growth (“Underwater Savior Part Two”) and faith (“Mystery”) show emotional depth beyond fairytale romance.
The Beatles at Shea Stadium

The band’s groundbreaking concert for 55,600 screaming New York fans on August 15, 1965. Made as a TV special using 12 cameramen, the film gives a comprehensive picture of what the event was like, including: setting up the stage, The Beatles’ helicopter flyover (they weren’t allowed to land on the baseball field, so they had to land on the World’s Fair building and travel to the stadium in an armored truck), some of the opening acts (Brenda Holloway and the King Curtis Band, Sounds Incorporated), tuning up in the dressing room, and most of the actual Beatles show (two songs were edited for time). Introduced onstage by Ed Sullivan (they had taped an appearance on his show the day before), The Beatles ran across the ball field to the stage in their new, Help!-style beige military jackets to play to what was then the largest crowd ever at a rock ‘n’ roll show. The Beatles give their all to entertain the distant, cheering crowd, occasionally cracking up at the sheer enormity of the event.
