Goorin Brothers – Bold Hatmakers Since 1895

The legacy of Goorin Brothers is one that follows a timeless approach to the art of hat making. In its fourth generation of leadership Goorin Brothers continues the tradition of authentic family craftsmanship and is supported by a team of individuals who share the same passion for the cultural, artistic and hands on approach to this century old brand. Goorin offers timeless, classic styles with a unique flare and personality — hats that allow you to make a statement without having to say a word.
Goorin Brothers hat making tradition began on the cobblestone streets of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania when founder Cassel Goorin sold his first hat off a horse cart in 1895. In the 1920′s Cassel’s Sons, Alfred and Ted Goorin, helped their father expand the business. Learning the trade from their father, Alfred and Ted were the original Goorin Brothers. War prosperity fueled demand for sport and leisure hat styles in the 1940′s. Outdoor leisure was incorporated into their new sporting line designed to accommodate the hunter, fisherman, and camper alike.
In 1949 Alfred moved the company’s headquarters to downtown Mission Street in San Francisco’s thriving business hub. By the 1960′s formal hats were no longer the norm for day to day life. In order to survive, the company turned to the ski industry and became the official head wear company for the Olympic Games held in Squaw Valley in 196O.
During the 1970′s Alfred Goorin Jr., Cassel’s grandson, took over the family business. Alfred and his wife, Glorianne expanded their foothold in the ski business and added winter accessories to their successful line of headwear. This included gloves, mittens, socks, and other sportswear. They even looked to Europe for ideas and inspiration for more fashion-forward styles.
In the early 1990′s, Ben Goorin, now the fourth generation of family hatters enters the business. The rise in popularity of quality made baseball caps and beanies spurred by underground streetwear made Goorin Brothers relevant for the fast developing skateboard and snowboard industry.
Today, Cassel’s great-grandson Ben Goorin is leading Goorin Brothers with an eye to the future and a strong foundation in his heritage. While staying true to the company’s authenticity and craftsmanship, Ben Goorin reaches out into San Francisco’s rich artistic community and continues to develop the most creative headwear today.

Sedgwick & Cedar

Based in New York, Sedgwick & Cedar celebrates innovation and creativity across multiple cultures. Originally formed as a way to celebrate Hip Hop’s earliest roots, the company has branched out to capture the excitement and relentless creativity found in emerging genres of the 1970s, 1980s New York.
At the tail end of summer, on August 11, 1973, neighborhood kids crowded into a small rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Ave, in the Bronx, to hear DJ Kool Herc spin. Eventually it got too packed to move, and the party headed down the block to Cedar Park. On that epic night Hip Hop culture was born. The Sedgwick & Cedar brand celebrates this humble birthplace and creative spirit. We pay homage to the genre, culture and innovation of the movement through exclusive designs that deliver history in every stitch.
Sedgwick & Cedar gives back to the often overlooked founders of the movement by providing royalties from S&C proceeds. Pioneers behind the brand include such legends as DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Caz, Afrika Bambaataa, Grand Wizzard Theodore, Coke La Rock, Sha-Rock, Melle Mel and Chief Rocker Busy Bee.
All items are available through hand-selected boutiques. Each article is limited-edition and incorporates iconic photography and art from now-timeless images by Jamel Shabazz and Joe Conzo as well as pristine reproductions of some of the original party flyers.
Sedgwick & Cedar’s mission is to reintroduce the rich, positive and often forgotten history of Hip Hop culture to a modern global audience.

Splaff

SPLAFF is your source for eco-conscious sandals, belts, bags, and accessories made of natural hemp, used bike inner tubes, and recycled race car tires. Our products are carefully handcrafted in North America in a 100% waste-free, earth-friendly process in which all leftover materials are either reused or recycled.
Founded in 1997, SPLAFF has been committed to making hardcore, earth-friendly products and nothing else for over a decade. SPLAFF’s greenness originates from its core values and lifestyle choices, not the typical corporate motivations. We’re not following or creating trends; we’re just doing things the way we’ve always done them, the way that feels right to us. SPLAFF started in a garage with a tire, a bike tube, and a shoe knife. The vision was to make a comfortable, long lasting, fairly-priced sandal from all recycled materials.

Ubiquity Apparel

Almost 20 years have passed since Michael and Jody McFadin high-tailed it from Southern California to San Francisco with a dream of starting a record label out of their new-born record store called The Groove Merchant. They had visited San Francisco on their honeymoon, and despite being caught up in the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake they fell in love with the city. Investing the last of their savings into a business that would combine their passion for music and provide an income to live on they opened the Groove Merchant record store on Haight Street in early 1990.
Within a year the small shop had built a reputation the world over as a place to find rare records and learn about new sounds. A haven for collectors, DJs, and producers looking for soul jazz, musical obscurities, and break beats, the Groove Merchant even earned a toast on the Beastie Boys song “Professor Booty”, “This one goes out to my man the Groove Merchant, comin’ through with the beats that I’ve been searchin’,” rapped Mike D. on 1992′s Check Your Head album. During these early days an English kid studying at the University of San Francisco wandered into the store and struck up a friendship with the McFadins. Andrew Jervis wound-up scoring a part time job in the store and as a fill-in DJ for their club nights.
With start-up capital of one thousand dollars and little knowledge of the record business, the Luv N’ Haight record label (named after the Sly and The Family Stone song) was launched. In 1993 the company incorporated as Ubiquity Recordings releasing an instant hit-record from a then unknown DJ called Greyboy.
Since then Ubiquity has grown into a company with several imprints: Luv n’ Haight remains the home for re-issue of rare groove gems with close to 60 releases, CuBop is the Latin jazz arm with just over 40 releases, and Ubiquity has over 250 releases ranging from hip-hop to funk to electronic music. With a worldwide distribution network, and around 350 releases the label is constantly striving to live up to its name, originally chosen because the label wanted to make unheard music available everywhere.
In 2005 Ubiquity moved its main HQ and warehouse to Costa Mesa, while Vice-President Andrew Jervis stayed in the Bay Area to handle A&R and oversee operations. Nowadays Ubiquity releases are available in digital format on the labels own site as well as all major digital outlets worldwide. In addition the label continues to produce CDs, LPs, singles and EPs. Ubiquity music has often wound-up on TV and in films as the label developed a reputation as a reliable and eclectic one-stop shop for licensors.
In addition to a wide-ranging music catalog the label also runs a merchandise and apparel company making clothes and accessories. Ubiquity T-shirts are available worldwide in small boutiques, and push the musical and California-centric philosophy of the label.
