THE BLACK FRIDAY FAQ

Q: Why are the organizers of Record Store Day celebrating Black Friday?

A: In the past Black Friday was an American event created by large corporate retailers as a shopping day that promoted mass produced items at super low prices in hopes of driving customers into their stores. RSD’s Black Friday subverts the model and creates pieces of art in the form of limited special editions, often numbered, from a diverse list of beloved artists. RSD’s version of Black Friday is an excuse to celebrate both the pieces themselves and the special indie record stores who carry them. Cheap, mass-produced frenzy is not the goal.

Q: When is Record Store Day’s Black Friday?

A: It’s the same day as the other one—always the day after Thanksgiving. This year Black Friday takes place on Friday, November 29th.

Q: Who is on board to be part of RSD’s Black Friday?

A: For better or worse, Black Friday is a North American thing—the US and Canadian record stores will be participating by stocking special releases (although some of the releases may be different in the US and Canada).

Q: Is Black Friday really Record Store Day II?

A: No. The special releases for Record Store Day are made to be sold solely at independently owned record stores on the day that Record Store Day takes place (the third Saturday of every April) whereas Black Friday releases are made for the holiday season. This means stores will launch the special releases on Black Friday but may choose to carry them beyond Black Friday (as supplies last, they are still limited runs). Black Friday is really more of a special release date then a one-day “holiday” like Record Store Day.

These independently owned record stores/shops will also choose whether or not they want to sell their Black Friday releases on their websites to draw attention to the fact that many of them offer an excellent customer service option for those who wish to support independently owned record stores via internet purchases during the holiday season and beyond.

Q: Can fans of Record Store Day expect a similar number of special/unique releases made for Black Friday as they’ve seen for Record Store Day?

A: There will be markedly fewer titles during the Black Friday period than you’ll find on a Record Store Day release list. By design, Record Store Day is not attempting to create the massive music celebration of Record Store Day. Rather, we are reminding music fans about the gift of music at the kick off of the holiday season. We will call it a victory if less cheap toasters and socks are given as gifts and more awesome music by some of the greatest artists of our time exchange hands.

Q: How can music fans find a local store who is celebrating Black Friday?

A: Music fans can go to “www.recordstoreday.com and click the link for participating stores, but as stores do their own purchasing, we can not tell you which stores will carry which titles, if any. Also, some stores on the site specialize in “pre-loved” music and choose not to stock new releases. We always encourage you to find a store near you and then strike up a conversation with them to find out their plans. (A visit to a record store is never a waste of time!)

Q: Will every store listed on the website participate in Black Friday?

A: By definition these stores are independent. This means they will choose whether they wish to participate. Generally speaking, a lot of them will.

Q: Will the participating stores carry all of Record Store Day’s Black Friday releases?

A: Some will but selection will vary from store to store, depending on what they think their customers will want.

Q: Where can music fans get a complete list of Record Store Day’s Black Friday releases?

A: During the week of October 22, a complete list of Black Friday releases will go up on www.recordstoreday.com, as well as a PDF that you can print out and use as a Gift-Shopping Guide, or maybe even better, as a Wish List.

Markalan - Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Markalan moved to Pacific Beach in 1994. During his first four years in San Diego, he worked as a photographer for the United States Navy. Over the past decade, he's been behind the bar or turntables in many of San Diego's nightclubs, and venues. He's shared his musical selections with Southern & Baja California, and the Mayan Riviera. During these years, he could be found exchanging his time for vinyl at Groove Records and Siesta Records.

He often worked for trade, to support his vinyl addiction. He currently owns over 8,000 records. "Listening to my father's albums is when it all began. Flipping through the stacks, cleaning off the LP, placing the needle on the record, reading the lyrics, studying the artwork, and enjoying the rich analog sound. Sure, there are occasional pops & you might have to clean the record. You actually have to flip the record at the end of the side. It's not a play list or program on shuffle. You are present, involved, and engaged in the listening process.
Please Keep Vinyl Alive & Support Local Artists!"
